Olkhon and ice trekking on Baikal

February - March;
Day 1. Arrival to Irkutsk . Transfer to Olkhon island . Accommodation in guest house.
Day 2. UAZ excursion to northernmost of Olkhon - Khoboy cape. Visit the ice grottoes.
Day 3. Free day on Olkhon. Walk to shore to Burkhan rock, ice trekking. Banya.
Day 4. Transfer Olkhon - Irkutsk by public mini-bus.
Day 5. Transfer Irkutsk - Listvyanka . Ice trekking Listvyanka - ice camp (26 km). Overnight in tent.
Day 6. Ice-camp - Vydrino village (25 km). Accommodation in wooden hut.
Day 7. Vydrino - Irkutsk. Accommodation in homestay.
Day 8 Departure.
Arrival to Irkutsk. Transfer to Baikal (small sea). Accommodation in hotel.
09.30 - Transfer to Olkhon island by mini-bus. (about 6 hours ride, 300 km).
13.00 - Stop on the way in a road café for lunch.
16.00 - Accommodation in hotel in Khuzhir. (twin room, double room).
17.00 - Evening walk to the lake.
19.00 - Dinner in a hotel. Overnight. ( - , L, D).
UAZ excursion to northernmost of Olkhon - Khoboy cape. Visit the ice grottoes.
10.00 - UAZ car excursion to Khoboy.
Today you'll have a day-ride by 4WD UAZ cars over the ice to Khoboy (the north of Olkhon). In summer time the road goes on the land but in winter once Baikal is frozen the road lies over the ice. Thus letting you see the incredible iced grottoes and frozen rocks. They are especially beautiful once the sun touches them and they sparkle. Before you reach Khoboy you’ll have several stops on the way to admire the beauty of local landscape. The most popular are: Kharantsy island with ice-grottoes, Three Brothers cape with 3 separate steep rocks rising from the water. Khoboy Cape (from Buryat language it means "fang, tooth") is the northernmost point of Olkhon Island. It is also called a "lady rock". You'll understand why it is so once you stay facing opposite it and recognizing the female's outline. It is spectacular rock which is located near the widest place at Baikal - 79,5 km. At clear weather it is possible to see the opposite shore and rocky outline of Saint Nose Peninsula. This place is also considered as one of the unique places with high energy outcome on Olkhon, as Big and Small Baikal seas meet here.14.00 - Lunch as picnic.
16.00 - 17.00 - Return to the hotel.
18.00 - Dinner, overnight.
Free day on Olkhon. Walk to shore to Burkhan rock, ice trekking. Banya.
10.00 - Walk to the shore to discover famous Shamanka rock (Burkhan cape).
Today you have free day to discover Khuzhir and its surroundings. You may have a walk to Shamanka rock on the shore which is considered one of 9 sanctuarities of Asia. According to the local legend it is the castle of the main God of Baikal lake.13.00 - Lunch.
14.00 - Possible to have a walk on ice to Kharantsy island or visit the Art gallery of local painters in Khuzhir.
17.00 - 19.00 - Banya. (Steam sauna). 19.00 - Dinner. Overnight in guest house. (B, L, D).
Transfer Olkhon - Irkutsk by public mini-bus.
10.00 - Morning transfer Khuzhir-Irkutsk. It is about 6 hours ride (300 km way).
13.00 - Lunch will offered for you on the way in a road café with tasting the local cuisine.
16.00 - Return to Irkutsk. Accommodation in hotel/homestay. If there is time you may have a walk to the sights of Irkutsk.
19.00 - Free dinner in a cafe or restaurant of your choice. (not included).
Transfer Irkutsk - Listvyanka. Ice trekking Listvyanka - ice camp (26 km). Overnight in tent.
09.00 - Transfer to Listvyanka . (70 km, 1 hour ride).
10.00 - Start of trekking on ice.
Walking over the blue abyss under your feet covered with veinlets of cracks. Day-distance for today is about 25 -27 km. We will provide you with plastic sleds where you may put your backpack and easily pull behind you on ice. If walking sticks or ice-cleats are needed – please, let us know in advance.13.00 - Lunch on the way as picnic on ice of Baikal.
17.00 - Arrival to tent camp.
18.00 - Dinner. Overnight in tent.
It is a unique experience to sleep on ice. At nights due to day/night temperature change the Baikal starts cracking. When it happens it makes strong booms and crackles. At first it seems unusual but after a while one will get used to it. This is what local people describe as "Baikal is breathing". Your tent will be heated with a stove.
Ice-camp - Vydrino village (25 km). Accommodation in wooden hut.
09.00 - Breakfast.
After breakfast we’ll pack our camping equipment and personal gear into the sleds and continue ice-trek. The closer we get to the opposite shore - the more snow we meet. You may of course stop on the way for making pictures! Experience being alone in nature, surrounded by endless frozen landscape. The trekking distance is about 25 km).17.00 - Arrive to Vydrino village – a small settlement on the shore of Baikal. You will be accommodated in the forest in wooden hut just about 5 km deeper in the valley from the village. (biotoilet, no shower).
19.00 - Dinner, overnight in wooden hut (or tourist base).
Vydrino - Irkutsk. Accommodation in homestay.
09.00 – Transfer by car back to Irkutsk. It is about 200 km distance.
On the way it it possible to stop in Baikalsk ski resort for mountain ski or snowboarding.
You will pass Utulik village on your way which offers dog-sledding in the forest with friendly husky dogs. It is possible to have a stop there if you would like. (not included, extra cost).14.00 - Accommodation in homestay in Irkutsk.
15.00 - Time for rest. It is possible to visit the central market for souvenir shopping or sightseeing the city.
09.00 - Transfer to the airport. Departure
