Thcum-golomo house of local Siberian people

In the morning you will be met by your guide at the train station/airport/hotel and have transfer to Taltsy museum – open air museum of wooden architecrture which is on your way to Listvyanka village – a small Russian settlement on the shore of Baikal. You’ll ride along Baikal highway which connects Irkutsk with Listvyanka for 75 km distance – the shortest access to Baikal lake from Irkutsk. The road is very picturesque itself. You’ll ride mostly through taiga forest and little Russian villages on the way which stand on the shore of Angara river – the only river which flows out of Baikal lake. Most of the village people used to be fishermen and hunters in the past, no industry in located there. On the 47th km of the highway you’ll arrive to the Taltsy museum, which stands on Taltsinka river valley, which is translated as “never freezing over” from the language of locals. The museum is unique and worth visiting for anyone who comes to visit Baikal lake. This architectural-ethnographical museum Taltsy is a collection of monuments featuring 17th-20th century’s history, architecture, ethnography. The visitors are given an opportunity to get acquainted directly with material and spiritual life of peoples living in Baikal county. The crowns of high trees will keep you in the shadow and clean air from Angara river will fill you with freshness. You’ll visit the old flour meals, merchant’s masons, church parish school, Ilimsk fortress tower and Buryat yurts. You can also buy souvenirs here or walk to the shore of Angara river.

After visiting the museum we’ll continue our way to Listvyanka village. Your second stop will be your first meeting with Baikal – the place where Angara river flows out of the Lake. There are about 336 rivers which bring their water into the lake but the only one called blue-eyed daughter Angara which flows out of the lake. Listen to the beautiful local legend told by your guide at this place about Angara and Shaman rock.

Our next stop is at the Cherskiy rock. This is great observation point with an amazing view to Angara’s outflow, port Baikal and Baikal Lake. The funicular will bring you up the hill and you may enjoy walking back yourself in the surrounding of trees and plants. Cherskiy was the  Polish famous explorer of Siberia who was exiled here after the Polish rebellion 1863. He made the first geological map of Baikal lake and there are 3 peaks around Baikal lake called in his honor.

Visiting the central square of Listvyanka where locals smoke and sell Baikal fish – Omul and grayling. You may try different varieties of it such as dried, hot and cold smoked. It is one of peculiarities in visiting Listvyanka. You may also have a look at the various Baikal souvenirs which are sold right here: maps, precious stones, shamanism attributes, magnets, jewelries and others.

Lunch will be offered for you in one of the local cafes with fish on your wish.

Another nice place to visit in Listvyanka is a wooden church of St. Nicolas. As you might know this saint is a protector of all travelers, sailors and navigators. There is an interesting legend about constructing this church which shortly says that one Siberian merchant promised to build a church in honor of St. Nicolas on the shore of the lake if he survives in a storm and avoids a ship wreck. The miracle happened.

In the afternoon as an option you may visit Baikal museum (not included) where you can get familiar with Baikal’s nature, geological structure, fauna and flora. Aquarium with alive Baikal seal – Nerpa, imitational diving to the bottom of Baikal, fish exponents will give you an idea of how unique the lake is.

If the weather permits it is also possible to rent a boat* at the central pier for 1 or 2 hours and have a Boat ride not far from Listvyanka. A great route is to go to Circum-Baikal railway to visit one of the tunnels. You’ll see how clear and transparent the water is as well as feel yourself being “on the lake”. But be ready that it is usually fresh on the water and may be windy.

Returning back to Irkutsk at 18.00.

Dear Sveta! Again I want to thank you for the nice tour in Irkutsk! So far I think, it was the best tour during our trip. No other guides in other countries had so much knowledge about the city and your English is great! :) Thank you, Edwin.
